TRANSLITERATION:

puraiyaravê uNarporuLai uNarnta pinnar

pûraNamâm apporuLin câTshâtkâram

maruviyiTa nitityâcam ceyva tallâl

marriraiyum nûl valiyê cella voNNâ

teriporuLai nûl valiyâl arinta pinnar

terivitta nûl moliyê mînTum collal

uraitarutan vâkkukku tukka menrê

upanishata vacanamellâm uraikku tanrô.

TRANSLATION:

Having faultlessly understood the

meaning to be grasped,

The perfectly full, direct perception

thereof can be realized

Only by one-pointed

contemplation thereon

And not by going through

the texts again and again.

All the Upanishad-s state that

Once the meaning has

already been grasped,

Re-reading of the treatises of

which the meaning has been realized

Is only torment by textual recitation.

COMMENTARY:

After gaining intellectual clarity of the state of Oneness through books, such knowledge

should be translated into practice to secure personal experience. We should not fall into

the habit of indefinite reading of books. Whatever little you learn, let it be perfectly

understood and assimilated. Whatever little you learn, put it into practice! This is the

counsel of great beings.

For example, a cookbook contains only the recipe and procedure to make the pudding!

Preparing and eating it, thus appeasing the hunger is not contained in the book, but in your application. Hence, cut down your reading to the essential minimum and increase your practice and experience. Lecturing to others from book-knowledge and reading only for the purpose of giving lectures are a burden on the faculty of speech; such words are vain indeed!
